Whispering “happy birthday”

I am filled with so much gratitude, as I am often one of the first people to welcome little humans earth side. With a hand on their belly to help them feel secure, safe, and grounded, I talk each new babe through what I am doing. "Let's take a look at these little toes," I say with a quiet and calm tone. "Ten toes! Wonderful," I exclaim, as she curls her toes around my thumbs tightly. Her mother, cozied up in bed with a warm meal, watches her little being move and react to her surroundings. A soft prayer runs through my hands as I perform what is known as the "newborn exam." For me, it's more than just a look-see at this fresh, new life. It is a moment to welcome her, to acknowledge the journey she has made, and lastly, to whisper her a "happy birthday."
